By those measures, I consider myself a happy person,” said Hosseini. I’m filled with gratitude every day.” In 2008, Hosseini was chosen for the prestigious Salzburg Global Seminar, a program that trains aspiring leaders in the Austrian city of Salzburg, where he learned how to design a community-wide approach to supporting people with mental illness. His new novel, And the Mountains Echoed, is now out and based on the experiences of his childhood in Afghanistan. The book is part love story, part political thriller, and part history lesson.
“It’s like a fairytale turned on its head,” says Hosseini. “I was there as a child, and I still remember the trials we faced. The book is a political thriller. It’s a collection of experiences from across Afghanistan.”
Born in Kabul, Hosseini had to escape with his family during the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s. From Kabul, he moved to Tehran in 1986 and then to the United States in 1990. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and three children. He is currently working on a documentary about the mental health of refugees in the Middle East.
Khaled Hosseini is an Afghanistan-born American author, humanitarian, and advocate for refugees. A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Kite Runner, The Ministry of Utter Short Stories, and The Children of Radium are some of his works. He is the author of And the Mountains Echoed and is a human rights advocate.
