The camshafts are mounted internally with a cast iron camshaft gear, which is often broken as shown in this engine. Removing the camshafts exposes two steel timing chain links. The timing chain is shorter, which allows a chain tensioner to be used. The timing chain is located in the same location on the flywheel. The bolts holding the half-shaft on the camshafts in the Coyote 521 have taught heads and are often broken off. To remove the camshaft, you have to pull the camshaft cap out of the block by unscrewing it from the camshaft. The second screw serves as a retainer to prevent the cap from coming loose. You can remove the timing case cover with two screws. You may have to remove the gasket that covers the oil pan to remove the timing cover.
